Diatomaceous Earth Filter Grade. Because of the porous nature of the diatom, it has the ability to filter impurities, even in water. Step 4 place another filter layer of activated charcoal on the top of the diatomaceous earth layer.
Diatomaceous earth comes in several forms, including granulated diatomaceous earth, milled or micronized diatomaceous earth and calcined diatomaceous earth. Like its many uses, diatomaceous earth comes in many grades. It is often referred to as pool grade, as this type of diatomaceous earth is designed to be used in pool filters.
This is inedible and better used in industrial practices.
This filter grade is made of cellulose and diatomaceous earth and offer a much better separating capability than pure cellulose papers at the same rate of filtration. They are also safe for all animals and though not medically proven, some people are advocating internal use of de for health claims. However, the filter grade form is rich in crystalline silica, making them very toxic to human use. It has a particle size ranging from less than 3 μm to more than 1 mm, but typically 10 to 200 μm.
